November 1, 2008

Hello from the great Lake Fork.Water level about one foot low 402.1 water temp 66 degrees water clarity about 2 foot.

November is starting off with a bang! It looks like it is going to be an awesome month and the big ones are starting to bite as the fall patterns go into full swing!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking Mat and Nathan Dailey and boy did the big ones crank it up! It was a total blessing,I praise the Lord for such an awesome day. After fishing the shallows the first hours with not much luck we headed for a little deeper water and I looked at an area were we had been catching some pretty good fish in the afternoon hours. As a matter of fact I had Mat and Nathan with the day before and we saw several big fish on the graph there but couldn’t make many of them bite. Well, it was a different story today. We immediately starting catching fish. Nathan caught a low end slot fish on a Talon Football head jig and I then made a cast to the other side of the structure with my Carolina rig and had a bite. I felt the fish moving off with my bait and set the hook with my Shimano Crucial Rod and the fight was on! Once we landed the beast it weighed over 10 pounds. After we calmed down Nathan was hooked up again and after landing a few more nice slot fish up to 6 pounds on the Jig he then hooked another big mama. She weighed over 9 pounds. Wow what a morning ! We had some lunch and then went back out on the pond. I was headed back to the spot were we caught those big ones and decided to check another spot close by before we made the long run. Well, it paid off right away as Nathan went back to work with the Talon Jig and landed 3 nice slots in the 4 and 5 pound range. Those fish played out and we turned on the Lowrance and checked the other side of the ridge and spotted a good sized group of large fish hanging on a tree on a break line. Well up until then Matt hadn’t caught a fish. Nathan was putting on a clinic from the back of the boat. I guess Mat had enough and started wackin some big ones himself. He made the perfect cast and hooked into a monster. He landed this hog and she weighed over 10 pounds and was nearly 25 inches long. Man we were having a blast. After taking some good photos, and releasing the big girl back to the waters of Lake Fork we re grouped and lined back up on our spot. Mat fires another cast and unbelievably hooks up again. This time the fish was coming to us and thought she was in the 6 pound range. WRONG! She changed directions and came to the surface and jumped and yet another whale! This sucker was fatter than the first one Mat caught. We finally wrestled her into the net and weighed her in at 10 pounds 6 ounces! We had to sit down a minute and get ourselves together. We headed to the marina to get a certified weight on her and take some better photos. Well with time left we hit one more spot. The fish were stacked in there at the mouth of a creek along a little tree line.7 fish in 9 cast on the Jig! After that we kept fishing and in the course of the next half hour we caught 6 more bass in the 4 to 6 pound range. I guess you could say the jig bite is on! What a day and I cant say enough about my buddies Mat and Nathan. They have fished with me several times over the last few years and today was by far the best day so far. Oh yea thanks for helping me try to recover the rod and reel that I knocked off of the deck of my Ranger Boat this afternoon. If any one drags up a Shimano 7’6” Crucial with a Calcutta 200TE DC mounted on it PLEASE let me know. I miss it dearly! Fishing on Lake Fork isn’t always like this but when things get right it can be so awesome.

Lake Fork is a special place and is loaded with monster bass. The set ups we were using today was pretty simple. We were Carolina rigging and dragging a football head jig. Once we started smacking them on the jig though it was hard to put it down. On the Carolina Rig we were using 20 pound Gamma and a 12 to 14 pound Leader using Gamma Edge Flourocarbon and a one ounce Tru Tungsten weight. The leader was 4 foot and the hook was a Mustad 2/0 wide gap Ultra Point. On the jig we were using a ¾ ounce Talon Football head Jig on 16 pound Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon. In the grass in the mornings you can catch them froggin and also using a white buzzbait. Look for creeks off of the main lake with a lot of grass in them. Check for bait fish and go at it for the first hour or so. You can continue to catch them shallow during the day on wacky worms and senko type baits but again having a good concentration of shad in the area is key.

I know it is deer season but if you want to catch some Hogs November would be a good time to be here. John Tanner Lake Fork Guide Report 1-1-08

January 3, 2008

Happy New Year! That’s right folks another one has come and gone. Last year was a good one with plenty of good memories. For one Lake Fork produced a ton of big bass and another, we were blessed with a good amount of rain fall that put the lake level back in good shape. This is key going into the first part of the year and into the pre spawn period which will be here before you know it. Amazingly you can catch some really big bass in shallow water this time of year. One would think that the place to fish would be in deep water but I am here to tell you that once it gets into January you can catch em pretty dog gone good in the shallows. But where in the shallows do you say? Good places to concentrate your efforts would be points. Points are always good going into January. Main lake points and secondary points leading into the creeks and large flats are key areas to find fish especially if the area has good green hydrilla beds present. Also keep an eye on the weather and the air temps, particularly the low temps at night. If you have a week with the day time highs in the 60’s and lows in the upper 30’s or low 40’s you can expect a good drop in the surface temp at night. This will hold a lot of the fish on these points. If you have warmer lows say in the 50’s this will change the way you fish and the location of some of the schools of bass. When you have warmer night time lows this will keep the surface temps warmer. As a rule when the water temps rise and stabilize after some warm nights a lot of those fish you have been catching on points will move back into the pockets or creeks adjacent to the points. Then, when the next cold front comes rolling in back to the points they go. I have seen it happen many times, so keep this in mind while fishing this time of year. How deep? Good depths to concentrate in would be 4 to 8 ft. What baits? Well, probably the most popular would be lipless crank baits. Any shade of red, orange or crawfish colors are standard for this time of year. Good ones to use are the Strike King Diamond Shad, Rattle Traps, Rattlin Milos, etc. Fish these baits over and down the edges of the grass beds with a steady retrieve making contact with the grass pulling it free as you hit it. You can also try the snatching technique. As the bait hits the grass give the rod a quick snap thus making the fish go into reaction mode as the bait deflects as it jumps out of the grass. Slow rolling a spinner bait through the grass is another excellent way to catch the big ones. Go with the ½ ounce Talon Spinner bait in white or white/chart. with double willows. You will be amazed how well this spinner bait comes through the grass. On the lipless crank baits there are some changes you can make to make this style of fishing easier on you. Fishing like this all day can be a lot of work. But the proper rod, reel and line can make a huge difference. I use a Shimano Crucial 7ft. in the cranking series (CRC-C70MH). I even use Gamma Edge flouro carbon line because of its less stretch or even Power Pro braided line if the grass is really thick. On the reel I like to use the Shimano Chronarch. You can still catch some fish (numbers) out deep on the road beds and humps with drop shots and shaky heads. As always look for them on your graph before you even stop. Have you seen the new Lowrance X-38CHD units? They are awesome. My new Ranger Z-520 has one on the console and I tell you it is like playing a video game. You can find the exact spot with your GPS using one of the new Navionics maps with the one foot contour lines (which is awesome by the way) and then you can see the schools of shad and the fish around them. You know exactly where to drop your drop shot or shaky head, it is unbelievable. This a fun way to catch fish, and have a good time while using light tackle. For my drop shot and shaky head rig I use a Shimano spinning reel , usually a Stratic2500 and for the rod I like to use a Shimano Crucial 6-10 Med/heavy spinning rod. On the line I will use 8 or 10 pound Gamma Edge Flouro carbon. On the drop shot try the Tru Tungsten drop shot weights. These weights make a lot of noise down there, thus attracting the attention of the fish. You also have maximum feel with these weights over lead because of the hardness of the tungsten. For numbers check out the deep stuff but for size and quality hit the shallows and work that grass over with the lipless crankbaits, spinner baits, jerk baits and even flip a jig or a tube on the wood along the grass edges. New year bassin can be a blast on Lake Fork and very rewarding.

Lake Fork Report John Tanner November 14, 2007

November 15, 2007

The past week here at Lake Fork has been a blast. The current Lake level is 402.67 and the average water temps are running 63 to 64 degrees. Water clarity is not bad with visibility at about 2 to 4 feet. Early in the day we have been catching fish on white Talon Spinner baits over the grass beds on secondary points leading into the creeks. Wacky rigged Trick Worms in watermelon red have also been boating some fish this week. The topwater bite has been spotty but is still worth throwing in the mornings. You can catch them on Yellow Magics and around the thick stuff I would be casting a white Ribbit frog. The key has been fishing grass that has bait fish around it. If you don’t see any bait activity, keep moving from point to point until you find them. It will make a big difference in your morning catch. In the mid day and on into the late afternoon the deep bite has been good. We have been catching fish on the Talon Lures “T” spoon , Carolina rigs and also big over sized spoons like the one made by Joe from the Tackle factory on hwy 17. It is the original big spoon that is the best. Don’t settle for imitations, Joes is the best and the one that the pros use. Go with 20 pound line on your spoons and Carolina rigs. You can hang some really big ones this time of year so my Shimano rods and reels stay spooled with 20 pound Gamma line. You never know what the next bite holds in store! Scott Chilcutt and Marc Jacobs fished with me on Tuesday and caught some nice ones. Scott caught a 9 ½ pound fish for his biggest and Marc caught two over 7 with several other nice bass on the Talon “T” spoon. Way to go guys ! Yesterday Mr. Steve Good fished with me and we caught them up to 8 pounds and today Rick Hamby and friend Gary fished with me and caught several nice fish up to 7 ¾ pounds. That 7 ¾ was Gary’s biggest bass ever, congrats Gary! Needless to say we have been having a great time here at Lake Fork and catching some nice fish. Look for the deep fish hanging around the deep structure at the mouths of the large creeks and also on some of the main lake humps. Once you mark them with your Lowrance unit it seems like they will hit the spoons right away and then slow down a bit. Once it does go with the Carolina rig and keep catching them. That is what worked the best today going with the spoons first and then switching to the Carolina rig. The best bite on the deep fish has been late afternoon. Late in the evening keep your eyes peeled for schooling fish at the mouths of the pockets along the main lake. Lipless crank baits, small spoons and small spinner baits will catch these fish. The weather forecast is for warm temps to continue through the first part of next week with some rain coming in towards Monday. A cooling trend is forecasted after that for the rest of the week with lows in the mid 40’s and highs in the upper 60 to low 70’s. Not bad for November. If you would like to book a guided trip with us here on Lake Fork call us toll free at 1-800-865-2282 or drop me a line at tanner@lakeforkbassguide.com. Also be sure to take a look at all of the pages of the photo section for a look at all of the happy folks holding their Lake Fork giants. For more booking info on a guided trip click on the trip info section. While you are here be sure and go by and visit with the folks at Diamond Sports Marine, local Ranger Boat dealer. They carry a full line of Ranger Boats including the all new Z-520 for 08” This a 20 ft. boat rated for a 250hp. It is the tournament anglers dream boat! I have one coming soon rigged with one of the new Yamaha series 2 engines and I cant wait. For a test ride go by Diamond Sports Marine on hwy 154. If you are in the market for a new boat Diamond Sports can fix you up. Ask for Ben and tell them Tanner sent ya. Or for a deal on a pro staff boat I have a Z-20 for sale now and my 08” Z-520 will be available also. Good Luck if you are headed this way.

Please continue to pray for my Mom as she is still in the hospital but is recovering. It will be a slow process but she is doing better. She asked me to say a special Thank You to all of you who have been praying for her. It means a lot to her and to us as well. God is good !

John Tanner Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report October 2007

October 5, 2007

This week here at Lake Fork the fishing has been pretty decent. The lake level is at an awesome 403.21 with the surface temp running around 82 degrees. We have been catching a good number of fish using various techniques as the fall season rolls in. Early in the morning go with the topwater baits such as chug bugs, pop’rs and white Talon buzzbaits. For you frog people you can catch some nice ones using rabbit frogs and scum frogs in the lily pads around the golf course area of the lake. After the sun rises a little go with the Texas rigged worms and the wacky rigged worms. Flukes rigged on a weighted hook are a great choice as well . Fish these baits around the grass beds on the main lake points on the south end of the lake. Look for bait fish running the grass beds for better luck . On the Texas rig I have been using a ¼ and 3/8 ounce Tru Tungsten bullet weight and pegging it using one of the Tru tungsten Smart Pegs. For the line I have been spooling my Shimano rod and reels with 16 pound Gamma Edge Flouro Carbon line. Speaking of Shimano Rods and reels have you seen the new reels by Shimano? They have introduced the all new Core Reels. Go by your local dealer and check them out, they are awesome! Later in the day we have been catching a good number of fish on the drop shot and also using Carolina rigs. On the drop shot I have been using Trick worms and on the C- Rig the baby Brush Hog in watermelon/red has been the ticket. There has been a lot of schooling fish showing up around the bridges and at the mouths of some of the larger creeks. These fish have been eating weighted flukes and chatter baits. Schooling fish are a blast and if you have never seen Lake Fork bass when they come up and start chasing shad you are missing a treat. Remember the larger fish will hang below the school a lot of times so try to get your bait underneath the ones that are surfacing for the big mamas. Jigging spoons are a good choice for this as well as weighted swim baits like the Storm wild eye. Fall fishing is awesome and with the weather cooling down it is a great time to fish here at Lake Fork. If you would like to book a guided trip call us toll free at 1-800-865-2282 or drop me a line at tanner@lakeforkbassguide.com. From the beginner to the expert we will make your trip to Lake Fork one to remember. While you are here be sure and go by and visit the folks over at Diamond Sports Marine our local Ranger Boat dealer. They carry a full line of Ranger boats and have an awesome parts and service dept. If you haven’t seen the new Z520 for 08″ they have one in stock . Go by and schedule a test ride or drop me a line and I will give you a test ride in mine. I have one that will be arriving soon rigged with one of the new series 2 Yamaha 250hp HPDI motors. Good luck to all in the upcoming Berkley Tourney. Please pray for our troops and their families as they keep us safe. Also please pray for my mother as she is battling here illness. Remember all things are possible to those who believe. John Tanner Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report 9-9-07

September 9, 2007

This week here at Lake Fork we are catching fish on all kinds of baits using several different patterns. This is typical for this time of year as we close in on the fall season. In the mornings we are catching fish on topwaters like chug bugs and yellow magics over the deep grass beds on the main lake points. As this bite slows and the sun starts to creep up go with the Texas rigged worm and also the wacky worms. Shallow running swim baits are also a good choice over the grass early in the mornings as the bass are up chasing shad. We are blessed with some really deep hydrilla this year and boy has it made a difference in the fishing.

You can find grass in many areas that is growing out to 15 ft of water. Key on the points that have this deep grass and you will be in business. If there is some brush just out in front of the grass on the point , that is where you can load up on bass on the plastic worms. Use the June bug early and then switch to watermelon or watermelon/red a little later. This has been a good pattern in the mornings for a while now. Later in the morning key in on the heavier brush out on the points in 15 to 18 ft. These fish will bite the Texas rig as well as a Carolina rig. On the Carolina rig we have been using baby brush hogs and Zoom lizards. Some of this brush is pretty brutal so use some strong line. I use Gamma Edge Flouro carbon in the 20 pound test to avoid having a problem. This line is awesome and all of my Shimano rod and reels stay spooled with it for no worries. On the Texas rig I use a ¼ ounce Tru Tungsten bullet weight and a 4/0 Mustad Wide Gap hook. As the day rolls along many of the fish will move into the thick grass for better cover. When this happens put on a heavier weight and flip the worms in the holes along the grass up in 12 to 14ft. You would be surprised what is hanging out in the thick stuff! On the flip side of the flipping don’t forget about the deep structure fishing. We have been catching some good ones out deep on Carolina rigs, spoons and also the drop shot. Look for the fish to be hanging out of off the sides of the deep points along the tree lines and heavy brush. Windy days have been better here lately on the deep bite but you can still catch them if you fish slow and methodical. The fish are grouping up in tight groups so good electronics are a must. I use Lowrance sonar units and couldn’t think of going out in my Ranger boat without one mounted up. They are the best units for finding fish I have ever used.

The lake is in great shape with the water level is just above full pool. The surface temp as of Saturday was 86 degrees. These patterns should hold through the week and may get even better as a cool front is due to arrive in a few days. Look for schooling fish all day long . They could pop up anywhere this time of year so be ready with your rattletraps or other shallow running crank baits.

The Big Bass Splash is coming up this weekend over at Lake Fork Marina and I want to wish you guys and gals the best of luck! It should take a real HOG this year to take home the top prize. If you would like to book a guided trip here on Lake Fork with us for this fall, winter or go ahead and set up your spring trip call toll free at 1-800-865-2282 or drop us a line at tanner@lakeforkbassguide.com. This awesome new bass boat is the first 20 ft. boat by Ranger that is rated for a 250hp motor. It is the serious tournament anglers dream machine. Go by your local dealer and schedule a test ride. They should be in the show rooms soon. I have one on order rigged with one of the new Yamaha 250 series 2 HPDI motors and I can’t wait. Go to www.rangerboats.com for more info. John Tanner Lake Fork Fishing Report

August 28, 2007

This week here at the great Lake Fork the fishing has been good. We have been doing the best in the mornings and again in the late afternoons. Main lake points have been great places to start using Carolina rigged lizards, baby brush hogs and Texas rigged worms. Most of the fish we have been catching off of these points have been in 15 to 18 ft . of water The best points have been on the windy side of the lake. Every morning for the past week we have had a pretty good breeze so it has helped tremendously. As always graph the area and see if they are there. If you get out real early you can catch some good ones along the grassy points on the south end of the lake using

Wacky worms and light weighted Texas rigged worms. Good colors have been watermelon red, watermelon and pumpkin seed. As the morning progresses look for the deep fish to be hanging out in submerged brush and timber in 18 to 22ft on the drop offs along the points. Again the Carolina rig and the Texas rig fished slowly through the brush will do the job there. Up in the day a lot of the fish around the main lake structure will suspend so go after them with large spoons. You can catch them on the big spoons in the early mornings as well over deep water on the south end of the lake in certain areas. Speaking of that, we filmed another show here on Lake Fork with Honey Hole All Outdoors Television last week and caught some good ones on the spoon. This episode should be on the air soon so check your local listings for times. You can see it early mornings on the weekends on FSN ( Fox Sports Net) or channel 27 in the DFW area so check it out. They do a great job and have an excellent fishing show. We have also filmed with Ark La Tex Sportsman 3 times in the last 6 weeks so look for some great Lake Fork fishing action in the near future on their program as well. Mid day the bite has been slow so to salvage the day fish shaky head worms and small crank baits along the bridges and then later in the afternoon hit the points again. Late evenings move back into the grass and throw the wacky worms and Texas rigs. As we roll into September look for a lot of the fish to start moving into some of the creeks. If the weather cools down a little a lot of the shad will move into the mouths of the creeks and the bass will follow. The mornings and afternoons are the best time to catch them in these areas as the fish feed heavily on the baitfish. Look for schooling activity to pick as always going into September. All we need is a few cooler days and especially some cooler evenings so keep an eye on the weather.

Good Luck if you are headed this way. While you are here at Lake Fork be sure and go by and visit our local Ranger Boat dealer Diamond Sports Marine. They carry a full line of Ranger Boats and have an awesome parts and service dept. Tell em Tanner sent ya. They are having a blow out on all boats in stock and will be letting them go at some great prices. They are doing this to make room for all of the 08 model boats that are coming like the all new Ranger Z-520. The Z-520 is a 20 ft. boat rated for a 250 hp engine and is going to be a hot one. Give Diamond Sports a call and schedule a test ride for your self. I have one coming and can’t wait to get it out on Lake Fork and break it in!

If you would like to book a guided trip here on Lake Fork this fall or this winter or even go ahead and book your 08 spring trips call us toll free at 1-800-865-2282 or drop us a line at tanner@lakeforkbassguide.com. From the beginner to the expert we will make your trip to Lake Fork one to remember. I would like to thank my sponsors Ranger Boats, Diamond Sports Marine, Yamaha, IPM ( international precious metals ), Shimano, Lowrance, Mustad Hooks, Gamma Fishing Line, Power Pro Line, Tru Tungsten Weights, Lead Head Lures, Minn Kota Trolling Motors, Hambys Beach Bumpers, BTS boat protectant, Muck Boots, Line and Lure conditioner , Mattress Sleep Centers and Lake Fork Marina. All of these fine sponsors make it possible for me to do what I do guiding here on Lake Fork and fishing the FLW Tour. Thanks for all of your support !

Please pray for our troops as they protect us from harms way. Also please pray for the Blair family as my friend Gary Blair went on to be with the Lord. He fought the good fight and will be missed. Read Romans 10:9.

John Tanner Fishing Report

August 20, 2007

tanner1.jpg

Week of August 14th.
This week here at the great Lake Fork fishing has been pretty good considering the hot weather. The fish are definitely in their summer patterns as the surface water temps climb into the 90’s. It has been hot but that is a good thing for those of us who love to fish the deep water structure for school of hungry summer time bass. It was a little slow last week but with the weather staying the same for while now the fish have been easier to pattern as they feed along the drop offs on the deep points and other off shore structure. We have been catching them the best on Carolina rigged Baby Brush Hogs and fry baits, Texas rigged 10 inch Zoom Ole Monster worms and large spoons. Most of the bigger fish we have been catching have been positioning themselves in and around the underwater timber along these areas. As in most cases this time of year good electronics make a huge difference when going after these deep fish. I use Lowrance Electronics and wouldn’t even think of going out in my Ranger Boat with out one. The sonar units they make have the best resolution and will show the fish clearly even in the trees and brush along the deep structure. Lake Fork is known for its awesome deep water fishing in the summer and I would have to say it one of my favorite ways to catch them here. The main reason is that you are fishing for schools of fish verses one fish here and one fish there going down the bank. In other words once you find them you can catch several at one location and usually they are all good ones. And if you have never got on a school of big ones in 25 to 30ft of water and had the experience of reeling in several of those hogs in from the deep, you are really missing out on what we call signature Lake Fork. With these fish being in the deep timber be ready by spooling up with some strong line that is very abrasion resistant. My Shimano Rods and reels will be spooled with 20 pound test Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon line on my Texas rig, spoon and on one of my Carolina rig rods. I will usually have 2 Carolina rig rods rigged up with one having the Gamma and then another with Power Pro braid for the main line. Some days they will hit the one with the Gamma Fluorocarbon better than the one with the braid. It makes a different sound down there and some days they will hit one over the other. For the weight on the C-rig and the Texas rig I use Tru Tungsten bullet weights. Most of the time I use a one ounce on the C-rig and on the Texas rig I will use a 3/8 ounce. These weights are by far the best tungsten weights on the market. The folks at Tru Tungsten have come up with insert free technology which makes their weights more sensitive than the other tungsten weights out there. A lot of the others have an insert in them to protect from line abrasion which muffles the feel of the weight which defeats the purpose of using them. Tru Tungsten has figured it out and makes there weights without it making them the best. They even come in an assortment of colors to match the plastic you are fishing with. As a rule when we are looking for fish along the structure, if they are on the bottom we are dragging the Carolina rig and Texas rig through them. If they are suspended we are catching them on the spoon by counting it down and working it through them. Boat position is critical so pay close attention where you are when you marked the fish and use a buoy marker to mark the school of fish. If you are off by 20 feet and not working your bait directly through them you will have a hard time catching them.

There is a new model of boat hitting the market by Ranger for 08’ It is the awesome new Z-520. This awesome new boat is everything for the serious bass tournament angler and being a 20’ boat rated for a 250 HP motor it should really run. If you are in the market for a Z-20 I have an awesome deal on a factory pro staff boat. Click on the boat for sale section for a look.

On another note we will be speaking tonight August 14th in Arlington at the University Baptist Church on Park Row at 7:00pm. There will be a brief bass club meeting and we will begin speaking immediately following. All are welcome.

Please pray for our troops as they keep us safe and also continue to pray for my friend Mr. Gary Blair as he battles cancer.
