Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report March 2, 2012 Lake Fork Trophy Bass Guide James Caldemeyer

March 13, 2012

March Madness is here everyone! What an exciting time of year to be at Lake Fork. Spring has arrived and Lake Fork is primed up for another great spawning season. Many anglers have waited all winter for this month to come and the great fishing that goes along with it. If you are after a big bass, now is the time. For those looking for a place to have some fun this month, come on out to Lake Fork with your friends or family to enjoy some time away this spring break! Here are some tips and techniques that will hopefully help you land the fish of your dreams!

The lake is currently 5.5 feet low. Despite recent rains bringing the lake up about 2 feet, we could definitely use some more rain. Water temperatures have been in the high 50’s to low 60’s lately due to a relatively mild winter. I expect with the full moon upon us that a number of fish will begin spawning soon. The water clarity is very stained in the northern creek arms but clears as you get to the south end.

I am targeting both prespawn as well as spawning fish right now. One of my best baits lately has been a square billed crank bait. I am using the new Talon Shibui 1.5 in chartreuse splatter back or dirty ghost colors www.talonlures.com. This is an awesome bait for working through the shallows. I like to target flats, points, shallow drains, or ditches in spawning creeks from 2-6 feet deep. The key to catching fish on this bait is allowing it to come into contact with timber. Bouncing it into any trees on the retrieve will draw more strikes. On real windy spring days I am also breaking out the Talon Shibui spinner bait. A chartreuse/white double willow in 3/8 or 1/2 oz sizes as done well in the same areas. If the fish are hesitant to bite these I know I can always do well on a chatter bait in the same size and color. It has a lot more vibration and will agitate a strike out of even the most stubborn fish. When I am able to find the right water and especially on windy days I opt for a swim bait to target the big females. A Berkley Hollow Belly is hard to beat! I like the 5” and 6” models best this time of year and my favorite colors are pearl, gizzard shad, and ayu. Slow roll this bait on the shallowest windy banks you can find this spring and you will be surprised at the fish you catch!

When the fish are not active on moving baits in the spring it’s time to sloooowwww way down. And when I say “slow” I mean fish very slow. As the fish move out of prespawn and into their spawning activity they will become more territorial than anything. Putting a bait in their nests or close to where they are and leaving it lay there will entice them to pick it up and move it out of the bedding area. On the contrary if you move it around a lot they will just watch it go by. So fishing slow is very important. Look for the fish to be spawning in 2-8 feet of water on standing timber, lay downs, docks and any re-emerging grass. Some of my favorite baits to flip and pitch are the new Berkley Havoc and Powerbait. A Texas rigged Berkley Havoc Craw Fatty or Pit Boss is very effective right now. Best colors are black/blue, green pumpkin, Okeechobee craw, and Big Texan www.berkley-fishing.com I will rig mine with a 4/0 wide gap hook and 5/16 oz Elite Tungsten weight on 17 lb Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon line. My most favorite new set up to throw this on is the Abu Garcia Revo MGX paired with a 7’1”-7’3” Abu Garcia Villian rod. If you had a chance to come by and see me at the Bassmasters Classic you know how excited I am about this awesome new combo and its overall weight of 10 ounces. Another new product that I am excited about is the new Powerbait “Thief”. This is another awesome new flipping bait from Berkley that will catch a lot of fish presented in the same way as the previous mentioned Havoc. If the fish are finicky and will not bite the bigger soft plastics I will often downsize to a 3/16-1/4 oz shaky head or drop shot rig. A great bait for these is the 4” or 6” Havoc Bottom Hopper. For anyone that is coming out to fish the tournaments, this is a very effective worm for catching under the slot fish. Also, If you are sight fishing for bass and find one that will not bite try one of these and you may be surprised how aggressively the bite it.

Went out this afternoon just to check on the fish. I didn’t know what to expect after the rain and crazy weather. The water looks good, maybe a few inches higher. The mud hasn’t washed in yet but as of now it looks fine and the fish were biting pretty good. Note whats coming out of the second fish. Its gonna be a fun week!

I caught them on a Santone jig today, but keep in mind you need to be prepared for a long day with few bites fishing a jig this time of year. I like it because its one of the best way to catch bigger fish. That isn’t for everybody, I know. Lots of other patterns working as well. Also, you can find my jig rod from Reel Time Rods at Lake Fork Marina soon!

Lance Vick Lake Fork Guide Report 3-10-12

March 10, 2012

Lake Fork is not the same without green water and grass I’m even missing the gator grass right now … Well thats the fun, challenging part of bass fishing Adapting to the current conditions of any lake makes us better fishermen . While I did not get to fish Lake Fork to much last spring due to being on the tourney trail. Last year there was a real pattern that I could run when I was home worked real well caught plenty of fish and big ones ……This year not as easy .But a couple patterns I have found I would like to share with you . First is Texas rigging soft plastics in water 2 to 4 ft deep in the back of spawning pockets . With a heavy action 7 ft rod spooled with twenty pound flourocarbon and a 3/16 Dominator tungsten weight and a 3/0 or 4/0 ewg hook I am using A Grande Bass grande stick or a Beavr Claws in green pumpkin and black and blue fleck. Last year you throw by a stump and there was a fish there this year i have not found that as dependable but have found that throwing in the openings in the stump fields to be working good and the reason why ? The trunks and tops of all the trees are laying in the openings as lay down logs giving the fish a hard place to lay eggs and stage on. The other pattern is a moving bait pattern in water from 2 to 7 foot deep around the creek channel bends in the back one third of the creeks cranking with square bill crankbaits 1.5 s and 2.5 chartreuse colors and some red ones. Any points with a 45 degree angle or a channel swing have been good to . I have been using 15 mono to crank with a 7 foot med heavy cranking stick. With the new run off the backs of the creeks may set back a week so look to main lake pockets and points for more active fish .There are a few fish out deep on points and humps you can catch them with 6 xd crankbaits
and football head jigs Good fishin to everyone
some Lake Fork Eye Candy below
And we did our share of pest control a couple of days You can catch one of these every cast with a 6 xds or a bomber slab white or chartrese colors They are great to eat you can keep 25 a person Go to the 2946 road by rainswood marina and catch all you want remember each sandbass you harvest feeds more largemouth bass and kills 10 of thousands of more sand bass

Lake Fork Guide James Caldemeyer Big Fish 3/7/12

March 8, 2012

Had this fish right at 10 lbs yesterday in 30+ winds. Very fat and full of eggs… had what I call the trademark “zipper belly” like she was about to explode. My customers also caught a number of great fish and I heard of some other big ones caught around the lake the past couple days. Fish are moving up right on time with the full moon as expected.

Lake Fork Guide Andrew Grills 2-29-12 Report

March 1, 2012

Water temps are steadily rising with these warm days and mild nights. There are plenty of buck bass up shallow if you’re looking for numbers. However, I am after those bigger females who are just waiting on weather and lunar conditions to get right. I believe the big females suspend this time of year. A suspended bass is a little harder to catch, but if you can put the right bait in front of her, she will probably bite. We are seeing a lot more traffic on the lake but most folks wont try to catch suspended bass.
I’d say a jerkbait would be good right now, but I fish a jig when I can get away with it. Its a big fish bait and this is the time of year to throw it if you like to jig fish. Instead of pitching past stumps, Im pitching directly to them and letting the jig get up on top of branches and letting it sit if I can get it to stay up there. Bites usually come when it “teeters” over the side and starts to fall. Hope this helps a little.
This pattern doesn’t hold long, but I love it when I can stumble up on it. Here are a couple fish from today.
Been busy but I have spring dates open. www.lakeforkgiants.com

Guide Eric Wright Lake Fork Report 2-29-12 BED FISH

February 29, 2012

Guide Eric Wright found 64.2 degree water in an area today, fish were not there yesterday but pulled in around 10am this morning. Had a total of 15 fish for the day, lost that many more on short strikes.

He found fish pairing up in the shallows and caught 5 off beds on pacu craws, dropshots, and a few fluke fish.  No one else I have talked with has found this pattern.
